What was your first tattoo?
The shop I got pierced at was by a college campus; my tattoo artist was a Fine Art major. Being 17 + broke, I asked if he could make a deal; ended up trading my LARGE chest piece for sitting for an oil painting for 16 hours! Got it when the shop opened on my 18th birthday. In my excitement, I never considered the time it'd take... after about 30min, I asked "so how long do you think this will be?" Body-conscious + introverted, I chose location because I thought no one would ever see it. Ha!
Is it true that getting tattoos is addictive?
Nope. Addiction is defined as "a brain disease manifested by compulsive substance/behavior despite harmful consequence" and tattoos rarely carry negative consequences, besides societal judgment. Also? 25% of tattooed people only have one tattoo. Most get them to mark a significant experience or express their inner selves. After you discover the power to define yourself, why stop? It’s your temple and many just enjoy decorating it how they like.
If you were voted Inked Magazine's cover girl, what would you do with $25,000?
First, I’d buy a “new” car as mine is on its last leg. Then, I’d put a down payment on a house I'm sincerely proud of, in a better school district for my 2 kids. Finally, I’d work to ACTUALLY OPEN a legendary, local, live music venue/art workshop in my city. Des Moines tragically lacks a space for local artists to perform, get live experience and make friends. Careers and souls here need a home like this; passion is priceless! It will exist to enable creativity and kindness, not capitalism.
